Creating circularity in the world of fashion

February 2023

A globally polarizing war, devastating natural disasters, the aftermath of a post-pandemic planet – it can sometimes feel like the world is on its knees. The cascading effects of these large-scale events impact not only those in the immediate area, but countless others far down the line.

January 2023

2023 has officially begun and with it, a deluge of resolutions for improvement, growth, progress. Whether you thoughtfully tabulate your intentions for the year ahead or prefer to avoid the subject entirely, change will happen. Based on the results of Material Exchange’s recent Digital Sourcing and Sustainability Survey, one industry where things are changing in a big way is fashion.

June 2022

Do you throw away the eggs leftover in your carton after making a batch of pancakes? Do you toss the remaining batteries in a 10-pack after replacing six dead ones in your flashlight? How about emptying out a carton of milk once you’ve poured some into your cereal bowl? These acts of waste sound silly – and yet, so many things – perfectly good things – get tossed aside, often without a second thought. In the fashion industry, one of them is deadstock.

Have you read the Roadmap to Net Zero report published by the World Resources Institute and the Apparel Impact Institute last fall? If you haven’t, give it a read. One of the main takeaways of the report is the estimated emissions produced by the apparel sector

March 2022

Water and the apparel industry have been deeply intertwined since the production of apparel first began. For thousands of years, water has been used to dye handmade materials. Thanks to Richard Arkwright’s 1770 invention, the Water Frame, the creation of textiles was transformed from small-scale, hand-spun capacities at home into mass-produced yarn for weaving in large factories, powered by water.

July 2021

Traditionally, the ocean’s place in pop culture has been classified largely by one of three spheres: adventure, beauty, or fear. Whether you were of movie-going age in 1975 or have experienced the trickle effects of that summer’s big blockbuster, Jaws may come to mind as an enduring example of the fear-evoking category.

July 2021

Sharks are some of the most feared animals in existence today. But let’s take a look at the numbers: swimming at the beach gives you exactly a one in 11.5 million risk of being eaten by a shark. Sharks, on the other hand, are killed by humans to the tune of about 100 million each year.

June 2021

Name the animal: I live in the frigid waters of a northern sea. I enjoy swimming close to the coast, exploring harbors and estuaries, but I steer clear of people. I’m often found alone, but when I run into friends, I use echolocation to communicate, and to hunt for food.

The Alpha & Omega in True Luxury

May 2021

Danish writer Karen Blixen once wrote "The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears, or the sea." How is it that the ocean has such an effect on humanity? Why do we feel drawn to this powerful place? Is it the mystery of what lies beneath its surface? Or the fact that most of our bodies are made up of water? Standing at the edge of the great expanse that is the ocean, it’s hard not to be moved. This vast body of water is our sustenance, our place of origin, our essence. Without it, we would not be. For this reason, and many others, Simris is celebrating World Ocean Day – we hope you’ll join us.

May 2021

Luxury: aspirational, powerful. A desire versus a need. A means of achieving social elevation. This constantly evolving concept is both tangible and beyond grasp. It is an item, a status, a label, an ambition or a feeling. The feeling component, though, this one trumps all others – because in order to feel good about luxury, we have to feel good ourselves.

May 2021

What timeless piece should one invest in these days? How about one that never goes out of style and will always offer a good return on investment? One that’s been around since the first cave art was created, dating back to sculptures of the Classical Greek gods up through today’s worship of lean muscle. An investment in your body, in your mind and in your future.

In a world full of uncertainties and false claims, we thought it important to clear up any misunderstandings surrounding the important nutrients that are omega-3s. Debunk the myths and mystery circulating about these molecules. Because no one wants to be an April Fool when it comes to their wellbeing – and omega-3s are essential for it.

March 2021

Here in the northern latitudes, early signs of spring are starting to make their debut. The days are getting noticeably longer, the snow has (mostly) melted, and street cleaners are beginning to sweep away the winter gravel from sidewalks and roads, allowing for the first crunch-free walking since October. But there’s something else – much less apparent to most – that marks the start of our downward slope toward summer: the filling up of Sweden’s maternity wards.

February 2021

Standing at the edge of a vast ocean, it’s hard not to be moved. All you see is the surface of this enormous space, an ever-changing landscape stretching before you for hundreds of thousands of miles. But what’s happening beneath is largely unknown as you look out across the crests and troughs of waves.

One of the best ways to grow a business is to make your customers happy. Promoting what you have to offer, figuring out what needs improvement, and maintaining high standards is usually a winning combination to bring in more business. But doing this successfully can be quite challenging. One simple way to gage your business’s overall success is by measuring how loyal your customers are. The net promoter score (NPS) of a business does just that.

September 2020

So you’ve decided to set up a referral program - congratulations! You’re ready to reach out to request those coveted referrals. You may be able to get quite a few by simply asking your customers to share their love for your business with their friends and family. However, you’re going to get much further if you can offer some kind of motivation for their efforts.

How To Dress Baby For Summer, Winter & Bedtime

July 2019

If the weather where you are is anything like it is down here in Austin, Texas, it’s HOT. The high temperatures of summer in this area last for several months. This makes it all the more important to protect yourself from the sun’s strong rays. Babies, whose new skin is more sensitive than the rest, are especially vulnerable to damage from the sun. But what sunscreen is healthy to use on babies?

June 2019

One of the hurdles toddler parents need to overcome is mealtime. Depending on the day, getting through a meal with a toddler may be an enjoyable, bonding experience or it may feel like a battle — one that you’re losing. Take the fight out of dinner with this toddler feeding guide (or at least make it less difficult) and you’ll be chatting — and eating! — through a civilized meal again in no time.

May 2019

Getting dressed in the morning probably isn’t something that takes a lot of thought. Dressing baby though? This can be a bit trickier since babies can’t regulate their body temperature yet. They also aren’t able to tell us exactly what’s bothering them. As the weather warms up, it’s important to know how to keep baby happy and comfortable. Keep reading for some tips!

Since its founding in 1906, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been responsible for protecting public health here in the U.S. It does this by regulating basically anything that can be ingested: food, supplements, medications, the list goes on. It makes sense, then, that baby formula is included within the FDA’s scope.

Remember when Amazon only sold books online? Way back in 1995, this digital shop was a pioneer in ecommerce. Customers from 40 countries purchased books from Amazon in that first month. Despite this early success, it seems a distant cry from today’s online mammoth where you can buy almost anything, literally.

March 2016

Social media platforms have become a major component of the online world. While their users often assume that the way they see these platforms now is how they’ll see them next week or month or year, that is not always the case. For better or for worse, changes do indeed occur, made every so often in an effort to improve the platforms and their feeds, and to stay competitive with the growing number of options that are now available.

February 2011

Having just traveled for 24 hours straight halfway around the world, I was in no state to make new friends, much less meet the love of my life. The frigid February temperatures I left behind at home made Western Australia’s 100 degrees feel even hotter as I shed layers of winter clothing. My internal clock was completely upside-down with jet lag. And I hadn’t showered in at least as long as I’d been traveling.
